Curtins

Here at Curtins we believe in the importance of developing and encouraging young talent, which is why we host a range of apprenticeships.

We now have 14 apprentices currently learning and working at Curtins in a variety of schemes, from Technician Apprentices in Transport Planning and Civil & Structural to Administration Apprenticeships.

The apprenticeship schemes offer a mixture of both hands on practical experience as well as learning in a traditional environment. Apprentices will gain a BTEC Level 3 Diploma, and as of September ’17 we will be launching Degree Apprenticeships.

As part of National Apprenticeship Week we spoke to Erin Callaghan- a Technician Apprentice, to gain an insight into a typical day of a Curtins apprentice and how the apprenticeship benefits him.

Erin adds: ‘A day in the life of a Curtins Apprentice varies greatly depending on the task. Typically, I will be working with AutoCAD or Revit, either drafting or 3D modelling designs. One day I could be modelling the foundations of a £30 million project and the next I will be drafting an external works drawing for our civils team regarding a small storage shed.’

Erin notes, ‘doing exams and assignments aren’t a good indicator of the knowledge I have achieved from being in the workplace. Spending time around knowledgeable people in the office has proved invaluable and more beneficial than any course I could have taken.’

In the future Erin hopes to become a fully qualified technician for Curtins and achieve his EngTech. He also wants to continue learning more about specific subjects such as; reinforced concrete and masonry works.

Curtins have a strong history of investing and nurturing young talent. Our current Chief Executive Rob Melling started off as an apprentice before progressing through the company.

Our Founder Bill Curtin believed:

“Youngsters can run this company. All they need is a guiding hand, to be encouraged, enthused, and then to be given their heads.”
